If you think this month's book picture is big, well so's the book, weighing in at over 800 pages. The good news? It's an anthology. This month's Book of the Month is: Even at a brick and mortar store, The Best of Hammer and Bolter Volume 1 is only going to cost you $15, is thicker than the Ultramarines Omnibus (and most every other Omnibus as well) and chocked full of short stories from the online magazine Hammer and Bolter by Black Library. Stories range from both Warhammer fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 including stories from both series premiere series Time of Legends and Horus Heresy and includes short stories from many of their top writers such as Dan Abnett. While a thick read, since it is an Anthology and you can pick and choose which short stories you read, I thought this would be a great way to start the Southern Inquisition Book Club. So pick up your copy and read a short story or three or ten and let us know what you thought by the end of the month of September. I plan on reading at least 1 short story a week to report on here in the forum myself. I would be great if others can commit to something similar!

Well 3 weeks have gone by this month and I've managed to read... 1 1/2 stories from this volume so far.
The first one and the one I read completely was the first story out of the book by Dan Abnett about a retired Inquisitor called "The Strange Demise of Titus Endor". While I admit upon reading the title my first reaction was "Endor? Will there be Ewoks?" I found it to be a fascinating story and my first in 40K that was non-Space Marine. Definitely perked my interest to read more and after reading another review about this story tieing up some vague loose end from another story, picked up the Eisenhorn Omnibus.
The second story, which is half read and going through now is "Primary Instinct" and is introducing me to a new Space Marine chapter, the Silver Skulls. So far, so good. More later about this story as I finish it.
