Hey SI,
I am brand new to this game, but I have a Tau army that I have nearly completed. I am attempting to scratch build the railguns for my 2 broadsides. I have run into a bit of a problem. In order to avoid modeling for advantage I need to know the distance from the chest of the suit out to the ends of the railrifle barrels.
Are there any Tau players on here who could help me out?

You don't have to worry about it. Distances, including shooting, are measured between the models' bases (page 4). And, for line of sight, you can only use a model's head, torso, arms, or legs (page 8). If only a gun barrel is showing the model is not "visible" (also page 8).
If I come across a broadside while cleaning my garage this week, I'll try to post a full set of dimensions anyways; no promises though.

I've been working on a Tau army as well and ran into the same question. 2 3/4 inches is the size but like meigeall said you measure the base so do what you want.

Yep both the others have answered it fully. That said if you decide to buy some railguns instead of scratch building, may I suggest Paulson Games I have seen these in person (Jeff that was on episode one, and who owned the Tau I borrowed for ATC used these). Also they aren't bad on the wallet. Hope you find this helpful.

Thanks for the link to Paulson Games. That is a great site for alternate Tau bits. I have already started making mine, but I am looking on there for more missle pods.

It's hard to model for advantage if you measure from the base as opposed to the barrel. The base is where you take damage, so it stands to reason that's where you deal it from. That being said go nuts with great big railguns!
